The "dragon," in its regal form, symbolizes the highest honor and
privilege. In ancient China, the dragon served as the representative of
the emperor, and dragon motifs first made their appearance on ceramics in
China and Japan. Europe conducted in-depth research into Eastern
porcelain, leading to extensive emulation and replication of its painting
techniques, themes, and color schemes. Meissen, in its early days, also
pursued contemporary trends. The dragon itself embodies qualities of
strength, wisdom, the spirit of change, the natural cadence, and emerging
ideas. Meissen's hand-painted Red Dragon tea set masterfully brings the
red dragon to life, not only capturing its vivid essence but also infusing
a touch of playful charm, revealing the designer's ingenious artistic
style.

Porcelain during the Enlightenment era of 18th-century Europe
symbolized the wealth and status of royal and aristocratic
elites, with the origins of European porcelain closely tied to
Meissen porcelain from Germany. Meissen porcelain introduced the
"Red Dragon" pattern in 1730, during the reign of Augustus,
Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. It marked the first use of
the "Dragon in Flight" motif on banquet tableware, and this
pattern remained exclusive to the Saxon royal family until
1918.

The dragon symbolizes formidable and auspicious power, particularly
in its control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods. In
Chinese culture, exceptional and outstanding individuals are often
likened to dragons, and in Chinese art, the dragon frequently
represents the emperor himself. Many Chinese proverbs and idioms
reference the dragon, such as "望子成龍" (hoping one's child will
become a dragon) and "龍馬精神" (the spirit of the dragon and the
horse).

Chinese dragons have long claws, horns on their heads, scales covering
their bodies, and sharp teeth along their spines. Typically, a pearl is
depicted around the dragon, which appears as a radiant sphere, either
being swallowed or emitted from the dragon's mouth. In Chinese
porcelain, it is common to find depictions of two dragons contesting for
the pearl, illustrating two opposing dragons that symbolize both the
power of yang (heaven) and yin (earth).

Before the unification of Germany, Meissen was a state-owned
enterprise located in East Germany. During that time,
porcelain was so expensive in Europe that it was often
referred to as "white gold," surpassing the value of actual
gold.
