Wedgwood Jasper Dip is the process of covering solid-colored jasper
(typically white or light blue) with a dark-colored jasper slip. Some
jasperware items are dipped on one side, while others are dipped on both
sides, with the base color showing at the edges. The jasper dip technique
was introduced in 1777 when the price of cobalt rose, making the dyeing of
solid jasper into deep blue costly. This dipping process is still in use,
especially for "noble" items and those relying on engine-turned wheels to
produce decorative effects through lines or patterns.
Wedgwood Jasper
Dip(Wedgwood

Jasperware is a type of ceramic named by Wedgwood for its resemblance to
a semi-precious stone quartz. Josiah Wedgwood I (1730-1795) introduced
jasperware to the public in 1775 after several years of arduous
experimentation, enormous expense, and setbacks. The creation of this
product was highly influenced by the contemporary popularity of reliefs
made from shells or stones. As these were expensive items, a competitive
ceramic type sounded very promising. The new type of ceramic material
invented by Wedgwood was extremely difficult to manipulate and resulted in
considerable waste. Initially, jasperware products were made in several
colors, termed "solid," because metallic oxides used for coloring were
mixed with the basic white jasperware.
Josiah
In 1777, "dipped" jasper was introduced, where colors were applied to the
usual white base before firing. This was a cost-saving procedure as the
metallic oxide dye materials (such as cobalt) were quite expensive.
Whether solid or dipped, jasperware was handcrafted with classical figures
or portraits in relief, along with trees, grass, and design patterns,
giving it the characteristic now known as the "Wedgwood look." This look
was so distinctive that all jasper products, regardless of who made them,
were often referred to as Wedgwood by many observers. Once the material
was tamed and perfected, Wedgwood utilized jasperware to produce a wide
range of items, including large pieces like vases, candlesticks,
jardinières, plaques, and statuary, as well as smaller items like medals,
reliefs, buttons, and beads.
