There is no other fish that we, Europeans, are so strongly associated with the culture of the Far East than koi. These domesticated carp are commonly known in Japan as nikishigoi (“brocade carp”) because their brightly luminescent multi-colored iridescent scales resemble the fabric of women's stunning kimono dresses. Koi have been kept in Asia as ornamental fish since about the middle of the 19th century, they are a symbol of friendship and love. According to legend and tradition, their presence provides their owners with happiness, longevity, freedom and protection from harm. No garden in Japan is complete without a koi pond. These places are considered a great place for contemplation and meditation.

It was during one of the many trips of the Meissen porcelain artist Horst Bretschneider to Asia that his creative imagination was impressed by the local culture, which led to the creation of many interesting works, including this fish motif. For several years now, as part of the collection of limited products, he has been producing products - vases, wall panels and plates, the paintings of which are filled with light and positive energy, magic and graceful movement of fish in the water, which can be watched for hours. Such a painting attracts the attention of the viewer and captivates the imagination.

The special paints used to paint over the glaze, such as the bright red that we see on this panel, are used exclusively for painting porcelain paintings. They are able to recreate the natural chromatic richness of these luxurious creatures.

An important role in the transformation of this vase into a modern jewel of Meissen porcelain painting is played by the skillful manner in which the artist places the fish on the surface of the product in a circle. And the golden background is reminiscent of spilled sunlight over the water, which attracts fish from the depth to the surface.
